Connecting the Dots

stevequotes

Let me start by acknowledging that I’ve been on a bit of a personal hiatus lately. And to be honest with you, it hasn’t been because I’m too busy or didn’t WANT to post, but because I simply had nothing to say. I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately and have experienced a few solid months of the universe kicking my ass and nothing really going my way. The details aren’t necessary to share, but I’ve been out of a job for a while now, which has put a lot of stress on us. The irony of the bad luck that we’ve had in recent months is almost laughable, and someday probably will be. However, the humor is hard to see right now, and the recurring question of “WHY?” (surrounded by expletives) has gone unanswered.

Every post that I write on this blog comes from my true self, and I didn’t want to bring the negativity I was feeling to this space. Life can be tough, and no one needs another source of negativity in their day. I know damn well that life is not all smiles and roses, but I’ve been pretty deep in this one and was losing the ability to pull myself out.

My wise and caring mother sent me the quote above a few weeks ago, and I’ve used it for motivation and reassurance. Inexplicable things happen in the world every day, and I’m not saying we will always have the answer, but it is true that our only choice is to move on. Whatever it is, from big to small obstacles in our lives, we have to move on and trust that there is something better awaiting us. I think the biggest word here is trust, which can be very difficult to achieve sometimes. When you don’t have the trust or faith in something bigger, it’s easy to fall deeply into whatever bad situation you are going through.

Steve Jobs talks about connecting the dots. I prefer this perspective over the belief that “Everything happens for a reason,” because assigning a reason to an event seems to be giving it justification. For me, it’s easier to look back on things that happened in the past and see where they led me. Situations can lead you to certain people or certain experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise encounter. Maybe they bring someone very important into your life or help you to discover a new path or a new side of yourself.

While some may criticize that this is a blind belief, for me it’s a necessary one…….necessary to keep me going, and to trust in the purpose of my future. So here I am, pushing through to the future, and back at the blog. Stay posted…

Friday Faves

This week has been a busy and fun one, serving as tour guide of Denver for my mom and her husband. Today, I’m sharing with you a few of my favorite summer finds, and hoping that the summer never ends!

Finding the perfect pair of white denim is always a feat for me. After multiple stores and failed fitting room sessions, these Old Navy gems are the ultimate steal.

Take your choice of color combos for these versatile summer sandals that can either be dressed down with shorts and a tank or perfectly paired with a sundress.

You won’t be able to put down this bestseller by one of my favorite authors, Liane Moriarty.

My jumpsuit obsession lives on in this classic Madewell piece. How genius and adorable are those shoulder knots?!

A 90s throwback plus comfort? I am not mad about the re-emergence of the Birks.

Cheers to the freakin weekend y’all!

Higher Vibrations

The spiritual masters and yogis out there will probably know exactly what I’m talking about from the title. For other readers, this may seem like a fancy, hippie-ish way to classify a topic that each of us encounters in our daily lives. Now, I am a very logical, factual-thinking type of person, but this concept, that was recently introduced to me in a book, fully resonated with me. It’s not the Denver culture rubbing off on me, but living in a new city for the last six months has helped open my eyes to different ways of thinking and living. This concept may or may not work for you, but I found it as an interesting way to view a topic that can help you take control of your life.

First off is the understanding that the world is made up of energy, and all energy vibrates at a certain frequency. The concept of “thought vibration” is determining whether the way you think is empowering or disempowering. “Essentially, thoughts that vibrate at a higher level are likely to be strong, positive and healthy thoughts, whereas thoughts that vibrate at a low level are liable to be negative, harmful and disempowering.”

The law of attraction then comes into play, meaning “like attracts like,” and that focusing on positive or negative thoughts can bring about positive or negative results. The argument is that what you think about most is what you manifest in your life.

change your thoughts

I’ve had some unfortunate things happen in my life lately, especially over the past month. It’s been a great example of the saying “when it rains, it pours,” and I’ve found it difficult to stay positive or to see happiness in my surroundings. This method is about turning your mindset around and believing, even when things are at their crappiest, that there is a bright shiny flipside within your reach. But, belief must be coupled with action, and this concept would suggest that I have to raise my frequency to match the vibration of the one I want to tune into.

We’ve all been around people who we would describe as giving off “good vibrations” (cue Marky Mark), and feeling drawn to them. In turn, we’ve also experienced the people who “give off bad vibes.” So, this concept isn’t as far from our regular lives as it may initially sound.

Raising your thoughts to a higher level of frequency is not an overnight change. Gradual improvement will lead to the point where higher vibrations become your natural state. Some actions to achieve this include becoming conscious of your thoughts and only letting the positive ones affect you, acknowledging and dismissing the negative. Good energy can also come from hanging out with people who vibrate highly, practicing random acts of kindness (who doesn’t feel better after that?), and being grateful.

While this might already sound like how you try to live your life today, everyone falls off track and into low frequency thought patterns – depression, sadness, anger – at times. This is another example of how much power your mind has over your life, and how you can change it, and therefore, change the world around you.

Use Statement Pieces to Add Style to Any Outfit

How many times have you stood in front of your closet, with a complete lack of enthusiasm, exhausted by the daunting thought of styling another outfit? I know I’ve been there plenty of times, groaning out loud “I have NO clothes,” with over 100 pieces staring back at me. Sometimes, all it takes is a little re-purposing and a few key pieces to add life back into your closet.

We’ve all seen a woman wearing simply jeans and a tee but managing to look impossibly chic. While fit is an important factor here, oftentimes, these ladies are using a statement piece to pull together their outfit. Statement pieces typically fall into the outerwear or accessory category and can range widely…a showy necklace, bright or patterned shoes, a luxe bag, a chic scarf, the list goes on.

The point is, that you can use one statement piece to pull together the most basic clothes into a stylish outfit. The statement piece is the cherry on top. Here are a few of my favorite examples.

THE STATEMENT NECKLACE

THE BLAZER

THE STATEMENT SHOE

Notice how each of these outfits consists of basic pieces that every girl should have in her closet. Make sure you have a few expensive-looking statement pieces on hand, and next time you’re having a lazy day, try one of these quick combos, and you may just find a new avenue of opportunity in your wardrobe.

There is no time like the present…

Begin doing what...quote

Procrastination. It’s something that most people struggle with, and I certainly have, since my elementary school days. It’s easy to understand why people procrastinate daunting tasks, such as writing that paper, cleaning out your closet, fixing the roof, or making that uncomfortable phone call. But, why does it seem that we also procrastinate our dreams? That vacation that you’ve always wanted to take, the career change that you’ve been pondering for years, moving away to a new city, starting a blog…I’m sure you can think of several desires in your life that you pushed off. (And if you can’t, then you’re a badass and I respect your courage)

There are obvious things like financial restrictions that hold us back, but the common excuse seems to be that “it’s not the right time.” I’m learning more and more each day that there’s usually not a perfect time for those big dares and adventures in life. It’s not because they’re not meant to happen, but rather, they defy routine and the unwritten rules of our daily lives. Wake up, drink coffee, go to work, go home, eat dinner, unwind, sleep, and restart. Keep a steady job, don’t rock the boat.

My husband and I experienced this feeling as we discussed, contemplated, and dreamed about the decision to move away from our home base in Kansas City. We put the decision off for years actually, waiting for certain pieces to fall into place. But once those pieces were settled, there was always another floating piece needing to fall in place. Once we made the brave decision that we were going to move to CO, we put deadlines on ourselves in order to keep the ball rolling. We gave our 60-day notice to our apartment complex, visited Denver to begin looking for a home, and eventually it all fell into place.

Mapping out and taking individual steps is key to beginning the process of reaching your goal, whatever that may be. Our adventures and our dares are often the moments in life that help us to grow as a person by learning more about ourselves, our abilities, and the world around us. Personally, I would rather take the chance of my dream/goal not working out than have the regret of never trying.

Remember, there is no time like the present.

All About…Fringe

fringe outfit

If you have signed on to Pinterest in the past month, flipped through a fashion mag, or have started scouring the stores for your spring wardrobe, you know that fringe is BIG. I’m a huge fan of fringe and already have some staples in my wardrobe and many ‘wants’ scattered on Pinterest board.

Fringe Wrap

Have you ever stopped to wonder who decides the trends of each season? I know that the runway styles tend to filter down to the fashions for us regular people, but who makes that first decision about what trend will be scattered across the runway and across designers? I doubt that Ralph Lauren, DVF, and Mara Hoffman schedule a tea time to sync up before NYFW. I digress, but it’s fun to think about…

fringe vest

Fringe gives your look a Boho feel and accomplishes making your outfit perfectly imperfect. It’s an interesting twist on your typical piece of clothing or accessory, and can be worn across all parts of your style — from tops, sweaters, and vests, to handbags and even jewelry.

These are some of my favorite fringe inspirations!

How the Change of Seasons Affects Our Mood

While sitting on my deck, where I established my office for today, I leaned my head back to feel the sunshine on my face and admire the tree towering above me. My breathing was calm, my body relaxed, and my mind in a happy state. I began to wonder about the psychological effects the weather seems to have on me, and whether others felt the impact that I often do.

I’m a sunshine-lovin’ summer girl at heart, and was born at the beginning of the summer. Over the years, I had heard here and there about researchers who believe your birth season has an impact on your personality later in life. While I don’t see a way this can possibly be true for the entire human (or even American) population, I’ve learned that many people have a strong preference for which season they enjoy the most. Some might argue that the preference is solely due to the activities and events that each season of the year brings. While this certainly can have an impact, for me, it’s more than just that.

How to Make Cheap Flowers Look Professional

flower arrangement

March is quickly passing by, which means it’s time to give my house a spring refresh! I’ll be clearing out the pinecones and dark colors to make way for fresh, bright decor that screams sunshine and sandals. What better way to liven up a space than fresh flowers? After I became obsessed with keeping a fresh arrangement in the house, I realized how much the hubby has been spending all these years…or should I say, USED to spend, before we were married 😉

Quality flower arrangements can be super pricey, especially for something that has a shelf-life of only a couple weeks! Purewow put out a great article with little tips on how to add a little magic to those grocery store-bought blooms.

Be Happy Today

The internet is full of inspirational quotes and sayings about how to live your life – what to do, what not to do, how to be happy – the list goes on and on. I personally can’t get through one time-sucking, Pinterest-browsing session without reading a quote that speaks to me and my life. Like many of you I’m sure, I reflect on that quote for several seconds, and then it is filed away in my “Quotes” board, unnoticed by me for another six months. The days get busy and we fall into old habits and our usual flaws. When I do go back and read through these simple sayings, it’s the best reminder and opportunity to re-focus parts of my life.

Recently I found a quote that suggests a very simple idea, but is something that I believe everyone can relate to.

Oscars Winners in Fashion

After dedicating four hours of my life last night to the Oscars, I couldn’t go without a post gushing over my faves! To be honest, I had many moments of “what were you THINKING??” last night, but there were some stand-outs that made up for it. Here are the ladies that wow’ed me and have kept me staring. And no, I don’t care what the men wore, because tuxes just can’t be that exciting (aka, girls rule).

Rosamund Pike

oscars - rosamund pike

Talk about stunning…this Givenchy gown has such a romantic feel to it, and her soft hair and makeup complement it perfectly. I love the detail of the custom made rose-like fabric with the scalloped edge at the neckline. This is one of those gowns that just screams ‘Oscars.’

Margot Robbie

oscars - margot robbie

Margot is so drop-dead gorgeous that I don’t think she could ever truly look bad in anything, but this was a look that I was instantly lusting over. She gave us something different than your typical Oscars dress in this chiffon Saint Laurent with the long flowing sleeves, and a blue tassel necklace that pulled the entire look together. Must. Become. Her.

Emma Stone

oscars - emma stone

It wasn’t just the color of Emma Stone’s gown that sold me, but the coloring of the entire look. The jeweled chartreuse fabric laid so flawlessly against her fair skin and red hair, with a coral lip to finish it off. I can’t imagine anyone wearing it better.

Sienna Miller

oscars - sienna miller

It’s only fair to divulge that this woman can do almost no wrong in my book…and the same goes for her designer. This navy and black Oscar de la Renta gown manages to stay consistent with Sienna’s edgy style while adding a feminine touch of subtle bows. She kept the jewelry, hair, and makeup minimal in order to let the gown do the talking.

What a girl’s dream…having your hair and makeup polished to perfection before stepping into the most exquisite piece of clothing that you could imagine! As a lover of beauty, the Oscars brings a lot of it to one red carpet in one night!
